2015 was a record-breaking year for Zopa. We won awards, broke UK peer-to-peer lending records and explored new ways for peer-to-peer lending to reach more consumers.

Breaking UK peer-to-peer records
This year Zopa has smashed through a number of UK peer-to-peer lending milestones.
The big one, which was covered widely in the media, came in August when we became the first UK peer-to-peer platform to lend its billionth pound. You can delve into the figures behind Zopa’s first billion in our infographic.
We also set monthly records for UK P2P lending. In July we became the first platform to lend £50 million in one month and we set our personal best in September when we lent £58 million.
April marked the return of £50 million in interest to our lenders since we started lending in 2005. This year alone, our lenders have earned £22.9 million in interest.
We consolidated our position as the peer-to-peer pioneers with two innovative partnerships with like-minded disruptor brands.
First up, we partnered with Uber, creating a secured borrowing product that allows Uber drivers to buy, rather than rent, their cars.
Next we announced a deal with Metro Bank, the challenger bank that received the first new banking license in the UK for over a hundred years. Metro Bank now lends its depositors’ funds via Zopa’s peer-to-peer lending platform, which is a great endorsement of our credit analytics and risk management processes.
The year started positively with a double Moneyfacts Customer Services Awards win in January. Zopa took home the Personal Loan Provider of the Year gong for the second year in a row, and added the ‘Best Customer Service’ award to its titles.
This was the start of a winning year for Zopa, with eight more awards added to the trophy cabinet. We were recognised for all aspects of our business, including our website, customer service and growth rates. You can see all of our awards here.
At the same time, we continued to help maintain the ethos on which peer-to-peer was founded and has thrived. In February, we were among the first to open up our our loan book to the public, so we are completely transparent about current and historic loan performance. This has since become mandated by the P2PFA.
2015 also saw another important step towards full industry regulation, which is something Zopa has always lobbied for. Having received interim FCA regulation in 2014, all peer-to-peer lenders had to submit for full regulation by the end of October and we will be a fully regulated industry by the end of 2016.
We are expecting even bigger things for next year.
Lending volumes are expected to double, and we are aiming to lend a billion in 2016 alone. We end 2015 with 94 more Zopians than we had at the beginning of the year, and are looking for even more people to join us in 2016.
The introduction of the Innovative Finance ISA in April and the inclusion of peer-to-peer lending returns in the Personal Savings Allowance will mean people can lend up to £35,000 tax-free depending on their tax code. The combination of these favourable tax treatments and the government endorsement will help peer-to-peer lending take a step even further in to the mainstream.
